Our School's History
Our school was founded in 1980 by John Connor and remains a family-run school today.
Mr. Connor started teaching in 1962 at a large state secondary school in Middleton, North Manchester. He taught in various schools across Trafford and Greater Manchester until 1977, when he was appointed Head of an independent co-educational school in Stockport for children aged 3 to 18.
During this time, he learned about the importance of creating the right learning environment so that children from all backgrounds and abilities can flourish, and he wanted to put this learning and experience into practice.
He opened Hale Prep School in September 1980 with just 32 pupils. Numbers quickly grew due to his hard work and determination to build a welcoming and friendly school with a family atmosphere that also delivered the highest educational standards. Pupils enjoyed small classes, specialist teaching, and a broad curriculum.
He was passionate about welcoming children without the need for entrance exams or assessments, knowing that it is the teachers' responsibility, with parents' support, to help children maximise their potential.
He established five core values which guided all decision-making.
To provide a relaxed and secure environment for its pupils, one in which pupils are happy coming to school.
To ensure that every child achieves their full academic potential.
To provide a well-rounded education, ensuring that the broader academic curriculum and extra-curricular activities are regarded as crucial in a child's education.
To achieve a harmonious and positive working relationship with parents based on confidence and trust.
To create a school where the pupils are aware of and respect the beliefs and values of others.
By the mid-90s, the school had grown to almost 200 pupils and was awarded the Sunday Times 'Prep School of the Year. Two studies presented to the Department of Education also referred to the school: initially as part of "Best Practice in the Independent Sector" and subsequently as one of five examples of successful private schools.
Our founding principles remain in place today. All the staff, led by Mrs. Vayro, share the same values, and importantly, they are supported by Mr. Connor’s four children, who are now the school's owners. Two of them, Mrs. Busby and Mr. Connor Jr., teach at the school, while the others actively run the business.
And, of course, Mr. Connor Sr. is always on hand to offer advice and share his experience
